Lately, we’ve been reading “365 Stories & Rhymes for Boys” published by Parragon 2009. The boys like the funny rhymes like “Fee, Fi, Fo, fum…” and I like the ones “Go to bed, Tom, go to bed Tom, Tired or no, Tom, go to bed, Tom.”
“Go, Dog. Go!“ by P.D. Eastman originally published by Random House 1961, is a total classic. It was little boy blue’s first book to read all by himself and the Chub Chub likes the phrases “go go” and “good-by” and “going” and her favorite picture is the dog party.
A thrifty find for the weekend included this edition of “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, illustrated by Greg Hilderbrandt and published by Unicorn Publishing House 1985. I love the large print for easy reading and its been fun with L sitting next to me taking turns reading it. His comment about lessons to be learned was that “one wants freedom, one wants wisdom, one wants to go home” (interesting words from a future Marine).
Wow, let me just say that I’ve been reading “David Copperfield” by Charles Dickens (abridgement by Edmund Fuller, published by Dell Publishing 1958) and even baby girl tries to take it from me to do a bit of her own reading. Its got amazing lessons that I’m learning from “Master Davy” and his associates:
COMMITMENT — ‘”He is the parent of my children! He is the father of my twins! He is the husband of my affections, “cried Mrs. Micawber, struggling; “and I ne-ver–will–desert Mr. Micawber!”‘ (page 116)
WORK ETHIC — “My advice is, never to do to-morrow what you can do to-day. Procrastination is the thief of time.” (page 118)
MORAL CHARACTER — “…with strength of character that is not to be influenced, except on good reason, by anybody, or by anything….and been the better for it….That you may begin, in a small way, to have a reliance upon yourself, and to act for yourself.” (page 174)
